Sun Da, a member of the 14th National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Charity Federation, and former Deputy Director of the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, attended the "2024 Sun Island Entrepreneurs Annual Conference" and delivered a speech.

On August 23, the "2024 Sun Island Entrepreneurs Annual Conference" themed "New Quality Productivity: New Industries, New Models, New Driving Forces" was launched in Harbin. The 2024 Sun Island Entrepreneurs Annual Conference featured various activities. The recently concluded Third Plenary Session again deployed strategies for prioritizing health development, providing clear direction and fundamental guidelines for building a healthy China.

The biomedicine and big health industry is a crucial focus for building a healthy China. It is an important breakthrough point for cultivating new quality productivity and serves as a vital support for meeting people's expectations for a better life. Currently, this industry is experiencing unprecedented development opportunities with strong momentum and vast potential. From a demand perspective, as living standards rise, health awareness increases, and population aging progresses, market demand for biomedicine products and big health products continues to grow significantly. From a policy perspective, several policy documents have been issued in China such as the "Healthy China 2030 Planning Outline" and "Several Opinions on Supporting Full-Chain Innovation Development in Biomedicine Industry," leading to continuous policy opportunities and benefits. From a technological perspective, in-depth research in life sciences and ongoing technological advancements are injecting strong momentum into transforming and upgrading the big health industry. From a foundational perspective, China possesses rich pharmaceutical research resources and a solid industrial base. Government support, social investment, and an increasingly favorable atmosphere for innovation are providing an unprecedented solid foundation. We must earnestly implement decisions made by the Central Committee of the Communist Party and State Council, focus on cultivating new quality productivity based on building a healthy China, adhere to innovation-driven development principles, fully leverage resource advantages, vigorously develop biomedicine and big health industries to enhance people's health welfare and contribute more to economic and social development.

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is a treasure of the Chinese nation and also serves as a key to unlocking China's civilization treasury. Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party led by Xi Jinping as its core leader has placed TCM in a more prominent position. Promoting TCM's inheritance and innovative development has become an important part of socialism with Chinese characteristics in this new era as well as a significant matter for national rejuvenation. A series of major decisions have been made to guide TCM to achieve historic achievements and undergo overall changes. After years of effort, TCM has not only played an important role in serving people's health throughout their life cycle but has also become a new growth point in industrial economy.

In his speech, Sun Da shared four insights on innovative development in TCM industry:

First is to develop medicinal herb planting according to local conditions. In recent years, demand for medicinal herbs in medical care and health services has been continuously released while wild resource supply has gradually decreased. The potential for artificial cultivation of medicinal herbs is enormous with increasing economic development impact. We should rely on technological support to fully utilize local natural resource advantages to strengthen construction bases for quality medicinal herb varieties and production bases. We should actively use mountainous areas and forests to promote ecological planting of medicinal herbs while innovating benefit connection mechanisms for medicinal herb planting. We need to establish standardized production systems for medicinal herbs to promote their authenticity and standardization while enhancing deep processing capabilities at production sites.

Second is to accelerate transformation and upgrading in TCM industry. The TCM industry is an important component of pharmaceutical industry. According to statistics from 2023, revenue from TCM industry has reached 700 billion yuan which accounts for nearly one-fourth of China's pharmaceutical industry while maintaining continuous growth momentum. We should fully utilize technological innovation to lead industrial upgrades by strengthening cooperation between industry-academia-research sectors while actively applying new technologies, processes, and methods to accelerate digitalization, networking, and intelligence construction within TCM manufacturing sector.

Third is to actively innovate digital service models in TCM. Currently digital technologies represented by internet, big data, artificial intelligence are rapidly evolving which profoundly changes economic social operation models while continuously creating new businesses and models becoming an important direction driving economic development. We should accelerate promoting deep integration between digital technology with TCM services while optimizing convenient service processes innovating applications in TCM medical service scenarios forming digital TCM service models that integrate prevention treatment rehabilitation personal health management creating new engines for big health industry development.

Fourth is to vigorously develop TCM health service industries. Currently cross-industry integrated TCM health services such as wellness care healthy aging healthy tourism are emerging rapidly releasing vitality. We should focus on meeting diverse multi-level health service needs from people fully leveraging TCM's advantages in disease prevention treatment promoting deep integration between TCM with elderly care tourism food internet culture etc., actively cultivating emerging industries such as herbal healthcare products herbal cosmetics driving resource factor technology restructuring creating new industries new business formats opening up new tracks for big health industry development.
